This week’s blog will combine pictures from the last two weeks. I was unable to write much, but as they say, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” I will however, offer a small vignette from the previous week, as the kids and I were gifted with a one of a kind experience.
Tuesday brought this treasure. We were playing in the play yard when I spotted a bald eagle overhead. We have vultures flying over all the time, but I immediately noticed the white tail feathers. Like a true Kratt Brother, I screamed enthusiastically, “Bald eagle, bald eagle, follow me!” We raced to the front yard and began searching the sky.
I thought we had lost sight of it, when I spied it in our next door neighbor’s tree - so close! I sat everyone down to observe it. After a few minutes, some of the kids were getting a little fidgety. However, I told them how lucky we were to see a bald eagle up close and what an amazing experience it was (because it was!!). They soon settled in. Two of the little guys sat on my lap and the others nestled around me while Pam took pictures a bit closer.
The whole experience was incredible. One, because I think bald eagles are beautiful, majestic, and amazing creatures. But also, because the pause the kids were required to take, really paid off.
Most of the time, kids are astounding observers who help us adults slow down. However, they can also be energetic balls of emotion who have very short attention spans. I pretty much required that we were going to sit together in the yard and watch him until he took off. Yet I could feel their calm come in almost immediately, nice and easy. We observed, chatted companionably, and embraced one another lovingly. It was such a beautiful moment.
After about 15 or 20 minutes, he took flight and showcased his massive wingspan directly over our heads. The moment became not only about the bald eagle, but a unique experience that WE shared together. The rest of the day, one of the little guys came up to me every 5 minutes or so and said, “Hey Patti, I miss that bald eagle.”
